  1. How can I find out what jobs are available?

    Call the job-line at 1-501-396-0020. Announcements are posted in each department, advertised one time in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and mailed to various area social & government agencies. Applications are accepted for posted vacancies only.

  2. How do I apply?

    Applications may be obtained in the Human Resources Department, 120 Main, 3rd Floor, and must be completed and returned by the closing date. A skills test and/or quiz to demonstrate or verify the required level of knowledge, skills & abilities may be administered. All offers of hire to City positions are conditioned on meeting drug test requirements and a job-related medical examination.   3. How can I become a Police Officer?

    Applications may be picked up and returned at any time during the year at the Training Division of the North Little Rock Police Department at 2400 Willow Street. Phone 501-812-5106. The Human Resources Department accepts applications only during the period that the testing announcement is posted publicly prior to the written exam date. Tests are administered semi-annually or more often if necessary, and consist of a written exam, physical agility test and an oral interview. Successful applicants are placed by the Civil Service Commission on a ranked, certified eligibility list and, as vacancies arise, names from the list are provided to the Police Department for the background investigation, medical and psychological exams and any other requirements. The list is certified by the Commission to be effective for six months from date of certification.

  4. How can I become a Firefighter?

    Applications may be picked up at Central Fire Station, 723 N. Maple Street any time during the year, Phone 501-340-5377. The Human Resources Department accepts applications only during the period that the testing announcement is posted publicly prior to the written exam date. Tests are administered semi-annually and consist of a written exam, physical agility test and an oral interview. Successful applicants are placed by the Civil Service Commission on a certified eligibility list and, as vacancies arise, names from the list are provided to the Fire Department for the completion of the background investigation, medical and psychological exams and any other requirements. The list is certified by the Commission to be effective for six months from date of certification.

VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTS: Entry-level announcements of job vacancies are posted in the Human Resources Department, City Services Building, and in each department for 10 days prior to a closing or test date as vacancies occur or when there is a need to establish an eligible register for a particular position

Announcements for all entry-level job vacancies are distributed to local public employment agencies and local social and civic organizations to help the City of North Little Rock in its recruiting efforts. Entry-level vacancy announcements and test notices are also placed as advertisements in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette at least seven (7) days prior to the deadline for accepting applications.

EXAMINATIONS: Examinations may consist of a written test, a performance test, an oral rating test, an evaluation of training and experience or a combination of any or all of these tests, as well as a physical examination, psychological examination, and drug screen.

ELIGIBILITY LIST: Candidates for certain positions, who have passed the written examination and/or other preliminary selection procedures are placed on an eligibility list for further consideration conditioned on passing any additional requirements. These may include one or more of the following: oral interview, background investigation, physical/psychological exams, drug screen.

CERTIFICATION: Positions classified as Civil Service require that all candidates successfully completing all selection requirements be certified by the Civil Service Commission. No appointment to a Civil Service position is complete until such time as the required period of probation has been served.

A probationary period of twelve months is required of each new employee before appointment is complete. A six-month period is required before promotion is complete.

HOLIDAYS: Eleven (11) paid holidays per year.

INSURANCE: Paid employee health insurance; 75% paid health insurance coverage for dependents; paid life insurance.

WORKERS' COMPENSATION: Workers Compensation Insurance coverage is provided for each employee for medical bills and work time lost due to on-the-job injuries.

LONGEVITY PAY: After completing a full year of employment with the City of North Little Rock, an employee is granted longevity pay at the rate of five (5) dollars per month times the number of years employed.

VACATION:
1 - 3 years service Ten (10) Days Annually
3 - 10 years service Fifteen (15) Days Annually
10 - 20 years service Eighteen (18) Days Annually
Over 20 years service Twenty-two (22) Days Annually

Vacation accrual begins with date of hire with eligibility to use accrued vacation leave after six month's service. Vacation may be accumulated to a maximum of 30 days.

SICK LEAVE: All full-time, regular, non-uniformed employees earn twenty (20) sick leave days annually with unlimited accumulation.

DISCRETIONARY LEAVE: Employees with two or more years of continuous service on January 1 of each year shall be granted from 16 - 48 hours discretionary leave during that year, depending on length of service.

RETIREMENT PLAN: Mandatory and contributory, begins immediately.
